Here and There Cables

A new book I find very moving is the Prayer Shawl Companion by Janet Bristow & Victoria A. Cole-Galo. They've assembled 38 knitted designs that give new meaning and depth to our handwork. The book is full of some great ideas and good patterns. It is also laced with prayers, blessings, poems and inspiration to add a spiritual element to our designs & knits. I was so moved by their prayerful handwork and deliberate blessing of both the process and the product. A wonderful addition to a knitting library.

I found a pattern in scarfSTYLE by Pam Allen, the editor of Interweave Knits. It combines some of the elements of the prayer shawl - in 3 x 3 ribbing and patterns in 7 row blocks - but fits my yarn and tastes a little closer. This book is a jewel. If you can find one in a library or bookstore, take the time to page through it. Great scarfs - new designs and colors. I could knit several from this book and be thrilled with each in a very different way. A creative, approachable, beautiful, delightful book that will inspire you every time you flip through it's pages.

I chose the Here and There Cables pattern by Norah Gaughan. Unusual for me, the scarf shown in the pattern is in a similar color as my yarn. I usually change colors and textures from the example scarf - but this one just called out to me. I've also been wanting to delve into the world of cables. I can hear the experienced knitters chuckling and clapping out there - I hear life will never be the same after you've worked your first cables. This pattern has an easily approachable cable pattern - and the twists and turns make it appear that any amateur mistake won't glare in the final product. I'm smiling as I jump into this fun project.
