I'm nearing the end of the second "big" square on the Big Squishy Lovefest. About to need more yarn. My husband brought three new skeins back from the states with him last month so I'm adequately supplied to finish the project. I've been putting off sitting and winding the skeins into nice, tight, useable balls because it takes about 45 minutes per ball. But need is pressing me and the deadline is now looming.
I had an hour and a half wait with my kids at a cafe yesterday afternoon and decided this would be the best time to get the first ball wound. I take large, floppy skein in my bag and order a Darjeerling tea with lavendar and get to work. Within seconds I'm confronted with yarn spaghetti.
(Backstory: I taught a knitting seminar at a Thanksgiving conference in which I demonstrated basic stitches, swatching, gave general tips and tried to inspire new knitters. This skein went along to show the utter necessity of rolling balls before beginning a project.)
back to the cafe: When I open the skein (originally in a figure 8) hoping to hang it over the side of a straight back chair for ease in rolling, I discover that the entire center section has been pulled out and seemingly knotted into a thousand knots. Literally. How did time in a rubbermaid tub and being felt by little hands result in this accident of nature?!
An hour and a half later I have about half of the yarn wound into a ball when I find a knot I was unable to undo. Prepare yourself for this part: I had to cut the knot out of the yarn and start with a second ball.
I go home still tense and agitated at this yarn and watch TWO West Wing episodes while trying to unravel the second half. I get about 2/3 of that half wound before it is unpassable again. I kept the remaining 1/3 of yarn spaghetti in my knitting storage in case I'm desperate for yarn in the end and HAVE to spend more of my life in the futile attempts to bring that into some type of order.
Total time spent: Over 3 hours (ouch!)
Balls rolled from this skein: One medium sized and two littles
Yarn remaining: A whole serving plate full of yarn spaghetti!
