It is unusual for me to put a movie review on this blog but wanted to take the chance to write about the movie Lars and the Real Girl. As a psychologist I was intrigued by the set up: if the entire town went along with a delusional disorder - and participated in it as "real" how would it effect the delusional person? Wonderful set up. It could have been easily ruined by writing, direction or acting...but wasn't. It was tastefully done. (I'm still not sure why it's listed in itunes as a comedy). The subject was handled with honesty, reality, delicacy, love and good old fashioned common sense.
One of the highlights for me was Patricia Clarkson, who played the MD/Psychologist of the town. I also loved some of the church ladies - and loved the scene of three of them sitting with him during his time of grief, knitting & eating casseroles. They said, "this is what people do when they love you. They sit. They bring casseroles." Perfect! A bittersweet story - a problem brought to light with sensitivity and care. A must see for all psychologist - and maybe an enjoyable view for the rest of you as well!
