MarLen yarn

One of my biggest disappointments in living in the Czech Republic is the lack of great yarn available in the occasional small shop selling crafting supplies/fabrics. I've lived here for over 10 years and have found the first Czech made yarn I'd like to buy! A major step in the right direction!

I was in Prague to take my Dad & Brother to the airport and had a few hours to spend in the city before catching the evening train home. Thanks to All Tangled Up's blog post I heard about an out of the ordinary path yarn shop that sells Czech yarns. A little gold mine I've never seen before. Thanks to knitting blogs I found a new great place in one of my "normal" cities.

There was a wall of yarn in a store packed to the gills in material & textile goods - and a sign saying that the yarn was selling for 70 krowns per skein (Approx $4 USD). I looked as much as possible through the plastic bags from the distance you had to stand from the yarn. Then I asked the clerk to come and hand me two skeins to look up at close. She said, "Oh, this one is one of the very few that isn't 70 - it's 120." I ask for the second from another place along the wall and she said, "This is also one of the few that aren't 70!" It's my gift. I have the ability to look at an entire wall through plastic bags and eye the TWO yarns that aren't the "normal" price. Someone should pay me since I'm so eerily good at doing this!

Here are some photos. The first three have a rope like quality about them and I"m planning another wine cozy with a striped pattern. The colors didn't photograph that well. The chocolate brown and mochaish colors are pretty accurate. The red is a weird red/orange shade that I love but couldn't match another skein to in the entire shop. Unusual shade but will add a great zing to the cozy.

The wool skeins are a deliciiously hand dyed brown, offwhite and cool aqua greenish color. Striking in life. Just had to come home with me - I'm not even sure what for...maybe one of Brooklyn Tweed's lace patterns done in wool for a twist? I'll dream on this one for awhile.

The creative juices are flowing now!

I loved this post about the Czech yarn!! Made me laugh to think that you picked out the more expensive one through the plastic bag! Yup, you're good alright!

See you tomorrow at Cafe de Mare!
